7 Ways to Play the 30 Yard Shot

LPGA Class A Teaching Professional Kathy Nyman takes you through seven different situations on the course that require hitting the ball 30 yards.

In golf, you are frequently faced with a 30-yard shot in many scenarios requiring a good bit of imagination depending on the lie of the ball and where the flag is located.

In this video, I take you through the best club and shot option for seven common situations.

Scenario #1: The golf ball is just short of the green on the apron and the flag is in the center of the green.
Best Option: Use your favorite club that you like to chip with to get the ball on the green so your next shot is a putt.

Scenario #2: The golf ball is short of the green and the flag is located in the front part of the green.
Best Option: Use a sand wedge with the idea of landing the ball just short of the green so that it will pop up on the green next to the hole.

Scenario #3: The 30-yard lay up shot.
Best Option: It is usually safer to do a chip shot with an 8 or 9-iron versus a pitching wedge or a sand wedge so you do not need to be precise on where to land the ball.

Scenario #4: The golf ball is left of the green with a bunker between the ball and the hole. There is plenty of green between the ball and the hole.
Best Option: Use your sand wedge to try and pop the ball up high so that the ball will land softly on the green. Hinge your wrists and try to drop the clubhead down behind and under the ball to get it to pop up.

Scenario #5 The golf ball is in the rough and the flag is in the back of the green.
Best Option: Use your favorite club that you like to use to chip out of the rough and land the ball about halfway to the hole and have it roll the rest of the way to the hole.

Scenario#6: The golf ball is just short of the green and the hole is located in the back of the green.
Best Option: Sometimes it is a smart choice to use a putter off of a tight lie to have a good chance at getting the ball close to the hole. Just remember to hit it a little harder because of the higher grass and do not hit grass behind the ball.

Scenario #7: The golf ball is under a tree with low hanging limbs between the ball and the green.
Best Option: Use a low lofted club like a 7-iron and chip the ball under the tree toward the green to give yourself a chance to putt.

As you can see, there are many different types of 30-yard shot in golf. Learning how to use different clubs and using your imagination can really help to lower your score.
